. . . it’s flipped into modes of pure companionate
experimentation. The whole idea of getting hitched
up for long periods of time is not very popular. But
then, remember, it’s not community that’s
disappeared but private identity. When identity
disappears, then the permanence of marriage is
meaningless. If you don’t think of yourself as having
very much continuity, then you’re not likely to think
of any of your relationships as committing you to
anything permanent.
